The chamber is looking to replace Gordon Renshaw, who resigned Jan. 31 and had served as director since June 2003. Mr. Renshaw said the chamber was looking for a new approach to its internal operations.

On Tuesday, the chamber made public the criteria that were determined in a Friday meeting of its executive board. They include at least 20 years of experience in business; a college degree in business, finance, public policy or equivalent experience; chamber experience; an established history of managing an office, staff and finances; and knowledge of Augusta-area business issues.

Applicants also must be able to support existing chamber members and cultivate new members. Sales experience and a working knowledge of small and large businesses will be considered.

Brett McGuire, a member of the chamber board who was chosen by the executive committee to serve as interim executive director, said a local person is preferred. The position will be advertised in the Augusta area starting Sunday.

"The training curve is much less severe if we do find somebody local,'' he said, adding that a salary range would depend on an applicant's skills and experience.

The deadline to submit a rsum is Feb. 21. Rsums and salary expectations are to be sent to: Chair, Executive Director Search Committee, Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, 4424 Evans to Locks Road, Evans, GA 30809, faxed to (706) 651-0023 or e-mailed to Chair.EDsearchcommittee@gmail.com.
