A pedestrian was killed Saturday morning after being struck by a car as he was walking on a highway north of Sylvania, Ga.
Samuel Lamar Adams, 30, of Allendale, S.C., died at the scene at about 5:20 a.m., Screven County Coroner James Strickland said.
At about 4:30 a.m., the driver of a Chevrolet Lumina hit Mr. Adams while he was standing in the southbound lane of Georgia Highway 301 about five miles north of Sylvania.
No citations were written, authorities said.
Bags of food to be given to families
The CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority Inc. will be distributing bags of food at 9 a.m. Thursday at McDonald's Warehouse, 1024 E. Robert Toombs Ave., Washington, Ga.
The food will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
People wishing to receive food must bring a picture ID and know the household size and monthly income for the family.
Only one bag will be distributed per family.

Museum exhibition on ancient Russia to end
The "Religious Icons of Ancient Russia" exhibition at Washington Historical Museum, 308 E. Robert Toombs Ave., Washington, Ga., ends Wednesday.

Walton Way lane to close for drilling
The right eastbound lane at the 800 block of Walton Way will close Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to an Augusta Traffic Engineering news release.
One eastbound lane will stay open to traffic, but those wishing to avoid the area may use Fenwick, Seventh, 10th and Telfair streets as detours, the release said.
The closure will allow crews to drill holes to test for pollution in conjunction with the Atlanta Gas Light mitigation project.
Lane to close for test on Washington Road
A portion of Washington Road from Kroger Road to Club Car Drive in Columbia County will see a temporary lane closure from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The closure will reduce westbound traffic to one inside lane. The closing is the result of testing for a proposed widening project, according to a Columbia County news release.
Seedlings available to some landowners
Free tree seedlings will be available to landowners whose property adjoins U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land along Thurmond Lake.
The seedlings, which include hardwoods, pines and flowering trees, must be planted on public property and are part of the corps' Reforestation Program, designed to establish second-generation forests.
Seedlings will be available today through Feb. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the visitors center at Thurmond Dam; on Feb. 5 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the entrance to Amity Park on Georgia Highway 43 in Lincoln County; and on Feb. 8 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Savannah Lakes Village store, U.S. Highway 378, McCormick, S.C.
