1. What's new at the Aiken County Public Library?
"The newest thing is that we have wireless Internet access. We started offering it last year."
2. Is the community taking advantage of your wireless Internet access services?
"Yes, they are. It seemed like there was a lot more interest when we first started it. I have been kind of surprised at how many people have laptops now."
3. What are your most popular programs?
"It's hard to predict what's going to be popular. I think there are just a lot of different factors involved in that. Probably the most popular program we have for adults is our series of legal clinics, which are done by the South Carolina Bar Pro Bono Program. Probably the most popular programs in general are the children's programs. We have weekly storytimes and special storytimes."
4. What kind of volunteer opportunities are available at the library?
"Basically, there are three programs that we have. There's one where someone can apply and get a tax deduction on their IRS return for doing their volunteer hours. We only have a limited number of those. We also have a program where people come in and help us with keeping the shelves straight. We also have a program that we just started where people come in and help us clean the compact discs. Volunteers makes some really significant contributions here."
5. What would people be surprised to know about the library?
"The thing that still surprises people most about the library is that we have so much more than books to offer, and the range of books that we have to offer. People would be surprised to know that we have cookbooks. We also have audio books on compact disc. Our Web page has access to a lot of computer research databases that are exclusive to the library. And the range of information opportunities and entertainment opportunities."
