"Lauren is a great role model and leader on the team," said Susan Sadler, the head coach of Aiken Christian School's Lady Flames basketball team. "She has a competitive spirit and is very tenacious. She has the ability to play anything on the court, and she's great working with the younger players. She has a very positive attitude. She's an exhorter of her teammates.
"She has a love of God and a love of basketball."
The team captain and only senior on the team, Lauren leads not only through her character but also with her athletic ability.
So far this season, she's averaged 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and a team-leading 4.8 steals and 1.8 assists per game.
As of Tuesday, she had scored 145 points. She said she has her eye on scoring 150 points this season. There's six games remaining in the season. At 150 points, the school will retire her jersey.
The Lady Flames had a record of 1-9 as of Tuesday.
"We've had a lot of close games," Sadler said. "We have a very, very young team."
Lauren started playing basketball on the church team at Millbrook Baptist when she was in elementary school.
"I love the action, the challenge and the competition," she said.
During her career on the Lady Flames, Lauren's statistics have increased in most areas. As a sophomore, she posted 8.3 points and four rebounds per game. As a junior, her average shot up to 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.
Aiken Christian Schools recently moved from the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools to the South Carolina Independent School Association.
"There are more opportunities for us to offer sports to our students (with the new association)," Sadler said.
This spring, Aiken Christian will have its first soccer team and Stephens plans to play on it. She said she also plans to run track. As a sophomore and junior, she played on the school's softball team.
"She's an athlete. She's fast. She's the type you'd die to have," Sadler said.
Not only does Lauren excel in sports but she also scores high academically. She has a 4.0 grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society.
She has been offered academic scholarships to Clemson University and the University of South Carolina Aiken. She also is considering Erskine College and Lander University.
Lauren is on the yearbook staff at school and leads a devotion group Tuesdays. She is the captain of Aiken Christian's American Cancer Society Relay for Life team.
