AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Ralph Raymond (Ray) Herries, age 78, beloved husband of Sue Ellis Herries, died at home with hospice care on Thursday January 18, 2007, following a two and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer. Ray was born on November 19, 1928 in Flint, Michigan to the late June and Ralph Herries. His early years were spent throughout the Great Lakes area, entering the U.S. Navy in the final years of World War II. His Navy duty was served aboard the USS Dyess primarily in Italy, the Mediterranean, and South America. After discharge he returned to Cleveland, Ohio entering Case Institute of Technology where he completed a BS in Metallurgical Engineering. After graduation he began a long career with the E. I. duPont Co; spending time in Wilmington, DE., Argonne National Lab, Chicago, MIT and San Francisco, CA among other sites. He retired in 1986 from the Savannah River Plant. Ray enjoyed almost any sport having to do with water, including power boating, fishing, and deep-sea diving. After retirement he and Sue began to live up to the words of St. Augustine "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." They spent much of the past 20 years traveling throughout Europe, Asia, and the U.S. In addition to his wife, Sue, Ray is survived by a daughter and her husband, Suzanne and Richard Chapman, a son and his wife, William and Sandra Sykes, two grandchildren, Jason Chapman and his wife Lesi and Daniel Sykes, and two great-granddaughters, Jennings and Whitney Chapman. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Barbara, and a grandson, Michael. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Monday January 22, 2007 at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, Ga. with the Very Reverend Robert Fain officiating. Following interment on the church grounds the family will receive friends in the church social hall.
