Planting knowledge

Adult horticulture classes are held from 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays at Aiken High School, 449 Rutland Drive. Topics include soil preparation, pruning, plant propagation and pesticides. Call (803) 641-0441.

Ageless meeting

The Aiken Area Council on Aging will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at 159 Morgan St. N.W. The public is invited. Call (803) 648-5547.

Choral auditions

Aiken Choral Society will hold auditions for new members at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Jan. 30 in the choir room of South Aiken Presbyterian Church, 1711 Whiskey Road. Auditions are for male and female singers of all vocal ranges. Rehearsals will begin at 7:30 p.m. immediately following auditions.

Youth basketball

Midland Valley First Church of the Nazarene in Clearwater is organizing a youth basketball league. Games will be played Saturday mornings in February and March. The league is for boys and girls in kindergarten through third grade. Participants will learn basketball fundamentals in a fun environment. To register, call (803) 593-3114.

Theater shows

The University of South Carolina Aiken's University Theatre Productions will present a 10-Minute Play Festival at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and Monday and 3 p.m. Sunday; and The Robber Bridegroom at 8 p.m. April 26-28 and 30 and 3 p.m. April 29 at the Etherredge Center, 471 University Parkway, Aiken. Tickets for each staged production are $12 adults, $10 seniors and $7 students. Call (803) 641-3305.

Homecoming

The University of South Carolina Aiken has announced a schedule of its homecoming activities. Events in January include Painting the Streets - murals that will remain on display the rest of the semester.

On Friday, there will be two events. Painting will be from noon to 4 p.m. The Aiken After Dark Carnival will be from 7 p.m. to midnight. The university's first homecoming parade will be on Laurens Street in Aiken at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28. The Faculty/Staff Basketball Game tips off at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29.

Horsey photos

Aiken County Historical Museum, 433 Newberry St., Aiken, is presenting an exhibit, My Favorite Horse Photography, all this month. The show is free.

The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 2-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Call (803) 642-2015.

Health fair

University Hospital will hold a health fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Dillard's in Aiken Mall, 2441 Whiskey Road. Volunteers to go

The Aiken Area Council on Aging needs volunteers to deliver meals in the Aiken, Graniteville, Gloverville, North Augusta and Wagener areas.

Meals can be picked up between 10:15 and 11:45 a.m. Call (803) 648-5547.

Knitters needed

Stitches from the Heart, a national nonprofit organization that knits and crochets blankets, sweaters and hats for children in area hospitals, is seeking volunteers. Donations of yarn are appreciated. Call (866) 472-6903.
