Brown's daughter focuses on legacy

  • Follow Metro

In sharp contrast to Tomi Rae Brown's tearful diatribe Wednesday, Deanna Brown Thomas went on Larry King Live on Thursday to speak briefly about the legacy of her father - the man the world knew as the Godfather of Soul.

"I don't have any comment to that," she said when asked by Mr. King to respond to Mrs. Brown's allegations that she has been shut out by the family since James Brown's death on Christmas Day.

"I am here to talk about the greatness of James Brown - the man who he was, the father who he was. He will be remembered as the great man who he was."

Mrs. Thomas said her father's death has been hard to deal with.

"It has not been easy. It has been a whirlwind of emotions. I cry every day."

When Mr. King pushed Mrs. Thomas to comment on Mrs. Brown's comments, saying that her silence would add more truth to the controversy, the Rev. Al Sharpton came to her defense.

The Rev. Sharpton said Mrs. Brown was not shut out. He said Mrs. Brown spoke at the service at the Apollo Theatre on Dec. 28 and then sang at the public funeral at the James Brown Arena.

"I don't know what shut out means. I think that what she got concerned about was when she demanded I say she was the wife. I can't get in that dispute. Mr. Brown annulled the wedding. ... These things have to be sorted out in a court. ... Certainly not on the pulpit at his funeral."

Further, the Rev. Sharpton said he was not hired to perform the funeral service, as Mrs. Brown alleged. He said he was a longtime friend who was following Mr. Brown's wishes.

"Isn't it sad that it's come to this?" Mr. King asked Mrs. Thomas.

"My dad was a very private man. I did not discuss his personal relationship and he did not discuss his personal relationship with me, so whatever went down between my dad and Tomi Rae is between my dad and Tomi Rae."

Mrs. Thomas also described her father as a man who had high expectations of his children.

"He was a very strict father," she said. "He wrote it in a song, Papa Don't Take No Mess. Education was very important to him. He had strong work ethics that he taught us all.

"He was the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, and he was that all the way up until the day he died."

I agree with babydoll1 If she

I agree with babydoll1 If she was his wife she would have gave permission for the hospital to move his body they would'nt have let his daughters handle that. The wife is in charge of all the arrangements she is saying that they shut her out of everything if she was his wife she would have been able to do whatever and ride in the family car. james brown is dead noone knows what went on behind close doors he may have had this issue with her about a dna he was'nt one to tell the media about it those are personal matters and if that's what he instructed his lawyers to do before he died noone could get upset with his daughters.Deanna, and yamma have good jobs the reason i'm just naming those two is because everyone keep going after them. deanna carried herself well by not responding to anything people only want to see drama. why not sit down with the lawyers and family and talk about everything instead of going on t.v. telling james brown personal business i know it will be more tomorrow when is it going to end? will she write a book next ? talking about the family on t.v. and their father of course that will make them shut you out.

to everybody that's saying

to everybody that's saying all of those negative things about james brown and his family, just think nobody is perfect, everybody had done some sort of sin in their life time it may've not been drugs, but yall done something wrong before, so stop making like james brown the only superstar thats use drugs and had other issues because no one knew what he was going through. all the negative things he did i'm quite sure had a reason. thats for him and god to work out, i know god forgave him for his sin. think about the good things he did before god call him home. about his so called wife we dont know what she was doing to james brown he's not here to defend himself, so let him rest in peace. do yall think god is happy about the way yall is going on about his son that he called home to be with him? i can answer that, no god is not please with it. will every body stop worrying about james brown and his family, because yall are not included in this and no one outside of his family and legal team will benefit from this. thats why augusta the way it is today because when someone do good for augusta, people starts bringing out the negative stuff about that person. rest in peace james brown

I don't know if anyone else

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but in all the tv clips I have seen where Mr. Brown was introducing Tomi Rae, he always referred to her as "my son's mother". Don't you think if he thought of her as "his wife" that would be the way he expressed their relationship. This was in several documentaries and news clippings I have seen over the past couple of weeks.

The love of money is the root

The love of money is the root of all evil. Money can not buy happiness. Tomi Rae, were you at Mr Brown's bed-side when his was dying? How could you talk about money the same day that he passed away? Do you have a conscience? Trust Jesus for the right thing to do. Have some integrity. Give the Brown's family some space.

It is extremely funny to see how all of you are quick to comment. Stay out of it, let them fight it out and then comment in the end.

i think the taxpaying

i think the taxpaying residents of augusta should hire an attorney out of atlanta and start a class action lawsuit to get our money back from the brown family and city government for furneral expenses.

We all can learn from events

We all can learn from events like this. One day, we will be watching and reading about Michael Jackson. What is the mother of his kids going to receive and what about those 2 kids. Hopefully, he will begin getting his will and documents cleaned up so Jesse and Al won't oversee his mess and will only serve as inspirators. The state and attorneys will get the biggest piece of the pie. We all have a number and we need to get things straight before we go.

When is the will going to be

When is the will going to be read? If JB put little James in his will, then I don't see how anyone can leave him out. So the family is not going to see the last of Tomi Rae.She was his wife and the mother of that child.

"I think the taxpaying

"I think the taxpaying residents of augusta should hire an attorney out of atlanta and start a class action lawsuit to get our money back from the brown family and city government for furneral expenses" SAID DISGUSTDWITHAGUSTA.........I agree with him! They should have had his services on his property in South Carolina and then the whole world would never know just how insensitive and backward some people in Augusta really are!
I know Mr. Brown's attorney paid the back taxes on his property but do you really believe that he didn't sell it back to Mr. Brown. Or kept it to keep the IRS from taking it! Even with all of his tax problems, Mr. Brown showed a lasting love for America. He understood that someone like him, who rose from nothing to make it HUGE, could only happen in America! And to add to the controversy of Mr. Brown's will being read and who's getting what! If he put his assets in a trust for his children Then the wife, so-called or otherwise, IRS and anyone else can't touch it!

When oh when will there ever

When oh when will there ever be a black entertainer in America who makes an effort to keep his/her affairs in order (business and otherwise) so that in the event of their passing their dirty laundry stays in the hamper after they die? You can always count on one or all of the following: paternity issues, tax troubles and/or love/relationship drama. Red Foxx, Sammy Davis Jr., Ray Charles, Lou Rawls are a few examples that spring to mind right off the bat. So far Gerald Levert and Luther appear to be the only ones recently deceased whose business hasn't been all in the streets. Come on MAN! Have WE learned anything? Joe Jackson's children, Bill Cosby, Prince and the rest of y'all better get on point. Yes, I'm black and I said it!

At least Deanna Brown-Thomas

At least Deanna Brown-Thomas has some class than Tomi Rae. Tomi Ray is making an A** out of her self because she has to whine to every tabloid televison program in the country. Deanna wants to protect her father's legacy and it is commendable. And btw, both daughters who sued Brown for royalties settled out of court and later made up.

jrock1956- i think if you

jrock1956- i think if you actually would read what you type you would never post anything. you are the typical backward person that has people thinking about augusta the way it does. i bet even charles manson loves america but the fact remains he was a criminal that committed the same crime again and again. for your info the children were a part of his trust if you would actually read it at wjbf.com and dont forget to put www at the beginning. and where did you get that i live in south carolina? i live in GODS COUNTRY- EVANS,GA. if the children could pay the taxes dont you think they would of at the time and not his lawyer? thats right -- they were suing their father at the time...

Indeed Mr. James Brown was a

Indeed Mr. James Brown was a great man and a wonderful entertainer. He changed America. God Bless him, but hopefully one day ALL of his children will meet and get to know each other. This is a very small world. I PRAY that none of them marry each other! Rev. Sharpton, it's your duty to help locate these outside children of Mr. Brown's and break bread. And then, his SOUL will rest in peace.

I think Tomi Ray shouldn't be

I think Tomi Ray shouldn't be on T.V. broadcasting their businness like that anyway. If you were given a check for $80,000 how could you spend all of that so fast. James Brown needs to be able to rest in peace now, he has paid his dues. His children, other family members and friends should be able to try to finish grieving without having to worry about what she's going to do or say next. Tomi Raye needs to concentrate on her and her child and stop putting her and Mr.Brown's personal and private life out into the streets and on T.V. because that's not where it belongs. Mr.James brown is gone but not forgotten and I think she needs to stop tarnishing the great memories that evryone has and hold dear to their Heart. Its hard when you lose a loved one,but just remember that he is gone to a better place and noone can take your heart or your memories away from you. To the Brown Family keep your haeds up and remember the time spent with James Brown and hold on tight to those memories and always KEEP GOD NUMBER ONE he's always there when you need him.
