Brown gives tearful interview

Tomi Rae Brown told Larry King that her once-cordial relationship with James Brown's daughters is now over, and she suspects it might be because of the money at stake.

Brown

In a one-on-one interview on CNN's Larry King Live, Mrs. Brown said Deanna Brown and Yamma Brown Lumar have excluded her since the death of her husband and their father Christmas Day.

Mrs. Brown, who sobbed throughout the live interview Wednesday night, said it was particularly hard to take because she was the one who begged Mr. Brown to reconcile with the girls after a rift formed when they sued him for song royalties.

When asked why their relationship had changed, Mrs. Brown said at first she didn't know but then answered, "I think it has to do with money."

The Brown children also were to appear on the show Wednesday but declined because Mrs. Brown was on the show, James Brown attorney Debra Opri said.

Ms. Opri also made veiled threats that Mrs. Brown's behavior was pushing the legal envelope of agreements.

"I'm not here to disparage Tomi Rae, but what she did with the BBC and the London newspaper and here again tonight and at the funeral is inappropriate to the memory of James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, and it should stop because she is contractually obligated not to discuss the business and personal issues of James Brown," Ms. Opri said.

Mrs. Brown said that since her husband's death she has not only been cut off from the family emotionally, but also financially and that she and her son, James Brown Jr., still have not been allowed in the Beech Island house they shared with the singer.

Mr. King asked about the son's paternity, with Mrs. Brown saying her son is absolutely Mr. Brown's seventh child.

Ms. Opri, in a separate segment, said the paternity has been questioned.

"I'm saying it's an issue that's going to be resolved very shortly," Ms. Opri said.

Mrs. Brown said Mr. Brown made sure James Jr. was taken care of. On the Saturday before her husband's death Monday, Mrs. Brown said, he told her to take out a check for $80,000 made out to her son and cash it.

"My husband was so smart. He told me that the day he died to go to the bank and get something that he had left for me and my son," she said. "It was a check for $80,000. And then he told me I would need it to take care of him until things went over."

Mr. King asked Ms. Opri about the money.

"If it does exist and she got it, she should enjoy it," Ms. Opri said.

During the call-in portion of the show, a caller from Augusta asked about an apparent argument between Mrs. Brown and the Rev. Al Sharpton during Saturday's public funeral.

Mrs. Brown said an incident occurred when her husband was awarded his posthumous doctorate from Paine College. Each of the three daughters was called to the stage, and Mrs. Brown said she walked up even though she wasn't asked.

The Rev. Sharpton then mispronounced her name, she said, and the two had a short but heated exchange, with Mrs. Brown accusing the Rev. Sharpton of not respecting her.

According to Mrs. Brown, the Rev. Sharpton supposedly said that he'd tried to be nice but that he was finished.

The result, she said, was that she wasn't allowed to speak at the public funeral.

MCCARTNEY WASN'T HERE

Sir Paul McCartney was rumored to be in Augusta last week to say goodbye to James Brown. The former Beatle's New York-based publicist, Paul Freundlich, said Wednesday that Mr. McCartney wasn't in the United States last week and called the report "gossip pages stuff."

Even though James Brown was

Even though James Brown was an icon and I personally loved him it was quite obvious Saturday that there wasn't any love shown to Tommi Ray Brown or the sister referred to as Niecy.
Selfishness and cruelty invades all socio-economic groups, Mr. Brown was a man of class, compassion and selflessness he proved that by leaving to bring toys and food to the poor of Augusta when he really should have been in the hospital. If one cannot put their pettiness, grudges and dislikes aside to pay respect and honor to their father's memory then they never will.
I,too, have experience the ugly face of greed and cold indifference at the death of a loved one's funeral and I know that there aren't any winners put one's differences aside and think about what the deceased would have wanted, take your pride, and unforgivingness out of the equation and honor the memory of a loved one with the spirit of love and unity for once in your lives . Death can bring family together but oftentime it divides them and sometimes we never get another chance to right the wrong we have bestowed upon each other!!

Tomi Rae (insert last name of

Tomi Rae (insert last name of choice here) just needs to be quiet for a few minutes and let the legal community work this out. Her pandering is only strengthening the opinion many hold: she is insane. How funny that she claims DISRESPECT when Sharpton failed to acknowledge her appropriately at the funeral. She is doing her best to alienate anyone who could be of assistance when she begins her quest for cash - right now, she's just laying groundwork for failure.

Tomi Rae was the wife, mother

Tomi Rae was the wife, mother of youngest child and even part of James Brown's music life for the last few years. Nothing excuses how she has been treated by the children, yes the same children that sued him for money after being cut from his will a few years ago, and his entourage of attorneys and business managers who equally stand to gain by erasing the reality of Tomi Rae and James Brown II (his son) from the equation. Greed is an ugly beast. It is just a shame it reared its' ugly head so quickly and so publicly as to not allow a wife and son enough time to grieve their loss before going to war. Good Luck Tomi Rae........

I say this, Tommi Rae, if you

I say this, Tommi Rae, if you are so in love with your husband, where were you when he died? How come a business associate was there, and not you? Nothing and no one could make me move from my husband, if that is what Mr Brown was to you at the point of his death. If you truly loved him, you would be praying, and not chasing the bank. Seems to me as though Mr Brown was not even in the funeral home yet, and you were arguing over his money. How come you are the only one to know of the $80,000? Mr Brown was very thorough when he dealt with people, and if you took money and are lying about it, may God have mercy on your soul. No amount of money is worth your dignity. You need to stop going on the news and every forumn you can find tearing down his name, something he spent years building. You were not with him the majority of his life. It is his fame, and not yours. His memory, not your life

Was it just me or did Tomi

Was it just me or did Tomi Rae try her hardest to sqeeze out a tear and it never materialized? I feel bad for. However, she should not be depending on James Browns' money to survive on. An inheritance should only be icing on the cake. How many people bank their lives on getting a lump of cash from a relative. I thought it was funny how she kept referring to the Beech Island ranch as "OUR HOME" Come on!!! Everyone knows she didn't earn a damn thing in there. On a lighter note....all this drama is going to be really good for the movie!!! Perhaps Jamie Foxx can play james and get another Oscar.

thankgodforcolumbiacounty....Sounds to me like your father is also your brother. Whats the significance of columbia county, I'm new here? Is columbia county lilly white, or something?

The fact that I'm caucasian has NO bearing on the Brown saga. You should remember, however....James Brown gave more to the community than you or I even have to give, let alone the compassion to do so.

i 2nd what zambu glenlivet

i 2nd what zambu glenlivet had said, i too watched the larry king interview!!!! try as she might the tears just did not flow, i am not to judge whether she is or isn't entitled to anything that is for the court to decide. i am only emphsizing that her attempts to elicit sympathy and/or compassion with tears failed miserably and if anything will make her look like she is only after the late mr. brown's money. a suggestion my be to lay low and conduct yourself with some class until this is settled

Stop Already! The television

Stop Already! The television apperances, tears, name calling, and public fighting is something James Brown would not be very proud of right now. Give the man time to die and the public time to mourn before you, the family start fighting. The truth of the matter is, you, Tami Rae are not even Mrs. Brown if you and James didn't marry after your divorce to the man in TX. If your child is indeed the seventh child of Mrs. Brown's, then he will be taken care of, but it's time to stop the MADNESS and allow the "Godfather of Soul" to rest in peace and allow his public to mourn. Black folk don't carry their family affairs to the media, they keep them within the family and solve them themselves.

I'd like to comment on the

I'd like to comment on the statement that has been made several times about why wasn't Tomi Rae here with her husband when he died. I'm wondering when she was told that James Brown was in the hospital and how serious his condition was. He was admitted because he had pneumonia. I'm sure no one expected him to die. It was Christmas weekend and she was due back Christmas Day to be with her husband. Can you imagine how difficult it would have been to get a flight from California to Augusta on last minute notice.

I had to tune in to Larry

I had to tune in to Larry King live because the more Ms. Hynie speaks and performs, the more she exposes herself and her intent. Mr. Brown's lawyer (Debra Opri) set it straight. Tomi Rae Hynie is exactly where James Brown placed her in this chapter of his life, and his family is only following his request accordingly. Black, White, Blue or Brown, Ms. Hynie wants pity, sympathy and gain however she can get it. James Brown's life and legacy should be perserved by his family and not tainted by a chick who ran to the cameras for attention as a opportunist.

Okay, did anyone else catch

Okay, did anyone else catch the fact that Tomi Rae cried broke after the lock out incident @ the JB Mansion and miraculously she now claims to have talked to JB the day before he died and he just happened to mention that he put something away for....$80K? By the way, what is an ITF?? i'm going to pray for this women and the family. Hey, why didn't they allow the oldest Daughter (Venisha- the dancer on the stage) to speak? I'm just wondering.

i don't know how much of all

i don't know how much of all this is truth or how much is hype. usually when a wealthy person dies it does take time for all the affairs to be put in order. i do feel that all the arguing could have waited until after the man was buried, that applies to all parties involved. greed always brings out the worst in people, i say he should have put money in a trust for his kids to be given out in small increments over the years as to not allow them to blow it and the rest to the charites that he loved.

Yes she tried very hard to

Yes she tried very hard to cry and I was moved at all. If you all listened and paid any attention to the things that she stated she made herself to be a liar in many ways. She stated that they were married but then they were to renew their marriage. She is talking about survival now that JB is gone I say she needs to live the same way she did before she met him. And then to hear last night that her child is not even with her he is with his MGM she needs to go home and be another and stop being a money sucker. It will all come out in the end and then what ever happens happen. but she does need to sit down and stop gossiping to everyone about the money issues. Just because JB loved her does not mean his daughter had to love her too. They probably but up with her for their fathers sake and now that he is gone they do not have to deal with her. Im sure that if the little boy is his he will get what is owed to him and if Tomi Rae is any kind of mother she will use the money for his best interest and not hers. She can no longer live above her means JB is not hear to take care of her anymore. BACK TO EARTH MS. HYNIE

Tomi Rae wasn't with him

Tomi Rae wasn't with him because she was getting the help she needed. Mr. Brown was the one who sent her there, and she was told that he (Mr. Brown) wanted her to stay there, that he was alright. He loved her, and probably didn't want her to have an additional emotional problems by worrying about him. Everyone figured he would be ok. The daughters weren't exactly by his side either. He might not have wanted anyone to see him that way, and figured he would see them when he got out. Even if she wasn't legally married to him, she was with him long enough to be a common law spouse. If the roles were reversed where a black spouse/partner was shunned and wasn't allow to have a part or at the least be acknowledged, I'm sure we would have been hearing cries of fowl from Rev. Sharpton and/or Rev. James. Now I don't agree with all the things that Tomi Rae has done and said, but she has a right to be taken care of and for her son to be taken care of. I just hope that everyone can put their differences aside and think about what Mr. Brown would want done. As much as he loves children, I am SURE he wouldn't want that little boy put out and ignored.

Bottom Line, Ms. Tommi Rae

Bottom Line, Ms. Tommi Rae should stay quiet till all things are settled. However James Brown felt about her it will come out in the Will. If it doesn't, then James Brown being the smart man that he is we'll know then. I too agree that she would have been by his bedside as he was passing over. His Manager too, but moreso Ms. Tomi Rae. One thing you learn after one passes, do not menntion money. it is the root of all evil. Right now b/c of the outpouring of love given to Mr. James Brown at the end, we should leave it at this. The world would love to see us fighting over money. If the daughters sued James Brown in life, so what, they didn't get anything, they will get their due in his will. Whatever happened, you can't pick family and you always forgive, that's just the bottom line. Don't fault Rev. Al Sharpton, he did a tremendous job in officiating the service and being visibly present in all transactions. The Brown children didn't have to say a thing b/c Sharpton had it all under control. If Sharpton misprounounced Tommi's name, it was unintentional -- all those folks around and keeping up on top of things, crap happens, move on.

Keep James Brown alive!

Why not just sit back and let

Why not just sit back and let the will and the courts settle all these matters Mr. Brown was very business minded and I am sure he had his wishes down on paper, and if there was a 80k check at the bank Mr. Bobbit or Mr. Dallas would know. As for the funeral I applaud Yamma, Deanna and their mother DeeDee for the way they conducted themselves, all were very respectful of themselves as well as Mr.Brown. As for TomieRae she should have been a reflection of Mr.Brown especially at a time like this, and she truly was not, she did not appear to be a greiving widow, but someone in need of the spotlight instead. May I say my heart goes out to all of us who truly loved Mr. Brown the man not the entertainer. As for the child I understand he is with HER mother most of the time, so if he is James child, let her handle any money for him since she is the one caring for him. We as a people shouldn't judge, it's not for us to do, leave that in the hands of the master. Respectfully, Charlotte Lee AKA Miss Soul

After Martin Luther King, Jr.

After Martin Luther King, Jr. was assasinated in 1968...the leaders of our nation summoned James Brown who peacefully calmed a nation that was experiencing complete pandamonia with his hit song, "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I"m Proud." Well, to the family, his wife and attorneys... right now ALL of you are LOUD and STUPID! If he leaves a legacy of great magnitude of being able to blanket a nation with warmth and kindness...then my GOD all of you should have inherited this from his genentics or simply from being around him so long (as most of you claim-yeah, right!) You owe it to him to protect his name and what he stood for and continue his legacy of love, peace, generosity and laughter. Lest you be reminded that EVERYONE will end up in a coffin one day. I just want all of you to know that to this day and from my 53 years on this earth..."I'v never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse! The funeral antics and Larry King Live interview were blasphemous! No thanks for giving him a send-off that was vile and repulsive. None of you should continue to proclaim and profess your undying love and respect for James Brown.

JUST ME- What I said is one

JUST ME- What I said is one should not bank on money coming from a dead relative. Besides, what family did she raise? According to reports, she wasn't even raising her son...her mother was taking on that responsibility. Don't get me wrong, I believe she should get what is rightfully hers. I would have never just kicked her out like that, but none of us truly know the details behind the families actions. I wonder if they'll let her play herself in the movie? Can anyone say Ocar performance?

I had the honor and pleasure

I had the honor and pleasure to know James Brown personally since I was 18 years old, and I know that he would not be pleased with the antics that have been displayed during and after his funeral. Tommi Rae only confirmed what everyone already knew about her. James Brown was a private man, and a proud man, who respected people, but did not allow anyone to infiltrate his affairs unless invited. Tommi Rae knows that she they were not on the best of terms, but Tommi Rae also knows that James Brown is kind, and generous to a fault to those that the cares for. However, betrayal is something he did not do well. James spoke a thousand words when he did not remarry her in 2004! I say to Tommi Rae, wait and see what happens with the Will. You know the truth, no matter how painful. Do not try to boost your career at the expense of an icon who changed an entire country. Let him rest in peace. If James II is truly the Godfather's, he will be cared for. Please sit down and stop embarrassing James Brown's legacy.
