Where we live

Anyone wanting to work off those extra holiday pounds can work out anytime they want at two local gyms. What started out as a hobby for personal trainer Tammy Garner has now become a full-time business.

Ms. Garner wanted to open a gym that was available to its members 24 hours a day.

"I really could not put the concept in my head, how am I going to make it 24 hours and not staff it, and make it work." said Ms. Garner.

Ms. Garner and her husband have now opened two locations of the Anytime Fitness franchise in Martinez. Each is staffed from about 8 a.m. until 7 or 8 p.m. and then remain open during the rest of the day. Members have key cards that give them access.

Ms. Garner is expecting to see more people working out after the holidays.

"The busy time has yet to come. It will probably be the first week, second week in January," she said. "And all of the people that work out pretty regularly, but they kind of drop off in the last couple of months, they will all be back, too. They come in and they ride hard on the cardio. They want to burn some calories."

As a fit personal trainer herself, Ms. Garner admits that she had a little too much pumpkin pie and apple pie, and turkey and dressing, over the holidays.

"It is OK, sometimes you have to take a few days off. People fret over that, but it's OK. Take a few days off and just jump right back in. You just don't let it linger ... for weeks."
