Woman wants grandkids to be happy

An Augusta woman has been fighting cancer and wasn't sure she'd still be alive for Christmas, but in the meantime, she wanted to ensure that her four grandsons have a happy Christmas Day.

"I hope that I will be here for Christmas, and I hope the Lord will lay it on some heart to help me make Christmas Day a happy day for my grandchildren," the 58-year-old wrote. "All they need is a toy for each and some good things to eat."

Thanks to The Augusta Chronicle's Empty Stocking Fund, this family and many others will be able to have a good Christmas.

Last year, the fund raised a record $120,159.56, helping 1,233 families, or 5,582 individuals. With the community's help, it can be another record year.

Donations can be sent to The Augusta Chronicle, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928; hand-delivered to the security station in the lobby of the News Building, 725 Broad St.; or made at augustachronicle.com/emptystocking.
