On behalf of my sister, Janet Davis, and all of our family, I'd like to publicly thank Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Alex Nelson for the kindness he showed to my sister following the death of her son, Kevin Simpkins ("Man charged in fatal crash," Dec. 12).
Sgt. Nelson was off-duty the night of the accident, and was the first person at the scene. While he was unable to save Kevin, he did take action to extinguish the fire that resulted from the accident. Additionally, he took time from his work schedule to come to the funeral home and provide my sister with details of the accident, undoubtedly providing her comfort in knowing that everything that could have been done for Kevin had indeed been done.
Sgt. Nelson also kindly provided us the gratis use of two limousines and two sedans the day of the funeral, and he assisted in the police escort to the cemetery.
We often hear about the kindness of strangers, and our family has been fortunate to experience this kindness firsthand. Jefferson County is blessed to have such a wonderful public servant in its midst.
