The Sounds Unlimited band will hold its 10th annual Christmas party tonight at Julian Smith Casino.
Lynwood Holmes, the manager of the band, said the party started as a thank-you event for clients who had hired the band throughout the year. It "grew and grew and grew," he said, until it became a lot more inclusive.
"It got to the point where it was an event that pulled other local musicians - a big jam session where people brought their instruments and had a good time," he said. "It's a party not like any other, a concertlike party."
The event will feature jazz, R&B and Christmas music. In addition to Sounds Unlimited, featuring Veronica Lynch and Eric Mayweather, performers will include the Finesse Band from Columbia, the new Augusta band Perfect Picture, TuTu D'Vyne, Pam Bowman and Pete McKie, Mr. Holmes said. Jay Jefferies, Paine College's director of research and public relations and weatherman for television station WAGT (Channel 26), will be the host.
There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres and a raffle for a trip to the 2007 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
Mr. Holmes said after the party expenses are paid, the band donates the rest of the proceeds to an area charity.
