Mariah Wilson Bates (JACKSON, S.C.)



JACKSON, S.C. - Mrs. Mariah Wilson Bates of Houston Loop, Jackson, was born November 22, 1920 in Aiken County, S.C. She departed this life on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Jackson Stonewall and Mary Roundtree Wilson. At an early age, she joined the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, where she later became the Honorary Mother of the Church. She was united in Holy Wedlock to the late William Bates, Sr. To this union, nine children were born. One preceded her in death, Joyce Ann Bates. She leaves to cherish her loving memories: five daughters, Betty Jean (Herbert) Lawton, Jamaica, N.Y., Estelle Johnson, Aiken, Sallie Mae (Arthur) Geter, Bath, S.C., Deborah Bates, Jackson and Audrey (Rev. Troy) Nipper, Aiken; three sons, William (Katherine) Bates, Jonesboro, Ga., Danny (Diane) Bates and Claude (Willie Jean) Bates, both of Jackson; 34 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Norene Bates and Iona Bates, both of Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends (who all simply referred to her as "Granny" or Aunt Riah"). Funeral services will be held Friday, December 22, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Jackson where the Rev. Raford Roundtree, Pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the residence or at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home beginning 12 noon Thursday and Friday at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home, Aiken, S.C.
