COLUMBIA - South Carolina receiver O.J. Murdock is leaving the football team and hopes to join the track team, coach Steve Spurrier said.
Murdock played in four games this season. However, he was arrested on shoplifting charges in Florida during an off week for the Gamecocks in October. He was suspended for two games.
Spurrier said Murdock is no longer with the team and, should he remain eligible, could connect with South Carolina's track program.
"He's an excellent track guy and that's probably his best sport," Spurrier said. "So we're going to send him off to coach (Curtis) Frye and, hopefully, coach Frye can make (him) an excellent track performer.
"He just can't do it all. Foot-ball's not for everyone. You've got to understand that. It's a lot involved, going to weightlifting, going to class all the time. It's not for everybody. So we wish O.J. the best."
