Denver Lanier (PORTAL, Ga.)



PORTAL, Ga. - Mr. Denver Lanier, age 85, died Friday at the Candler Hospital in Savannah. The native and life long resident of Bulloch County was a 1939 graduate of Portal High School and a 1944 graduate of Georgia Teacher's College receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. He taught school in Bulloch and Jenkins County and was a farmer for most of his life. Mr. Lanier served on the Bulloch County Board of Education for 18years and as Chairman of the Bulloch County Commission for 4 years. He was a member and former president of the Bulloch County Wildlife Club, a member and former president of the Statesboro Lion's Club and a former Rotarian. Mr. Lanier was a member of the Ogeechee Lodge #213 F&AM where he was a Mason and had received his 50 year pin. He was a Gideon with Gideon's International for over 30 years. He was a member of the Portal Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for over 25 years and was a deacon and former chairman. Mr. Lanier was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Virginia 'Tot' Lovett Lanier. Surviving are his wife, Cleo Hodges Lanier; two daughters and sons in law, Joann and Clifford Smith of Orlando, FL and Ginny and Danny Kirkland of Portal; two sons and daughters in law, Jimmy and Ann Lanier and Lannie and Monica Lanier all of Portal; nine grandchildren, Ty and Trace White of Orlando, FL, Jason Lanier, Lacey Lanier, Mark Lanier, Chase Kirkland, Jordan Kirkland, Joshua Lanier and Taggert Lanier all of Portal and 6 great grandchildren. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2:00pm in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. Maurice Crowder officiating, assisted by Rev. Don Berry. Burial will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens with Rev. Ron Andrew officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of the Portal Baptist Church. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Portal Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Baptist St. Portal, Ga. 30450 or The Gideon's International, P.O.
