J. David Roper won Tuesday's runoff election to become the next superior court judge.
About 64 percent of the voters in Richmond, Columbia and Burke counties picked Mr. Roper to replace retiring Chief Judge William M. Fleming Jr. on the Augusta Judicial Circuit Superior Court bench.
Mr. Roper held a huge lead over Mr. Williams in Columbia County through the night, and he won the majority of Richmond County votes. Mr. Williams won Burke County.
Mr. Roper and Mr. Williams placed first and second in last month's general election. Candidates Willie Saunders and Charles "Les" Wilkinson were eliminated in the general election.
Mr. Roper thanked all the people who supported and voted for him, and the campaign committee, led by James Lyle, whose efforts helped him succeed Tuesday night.
