An argument over who urinated on a motel room door led to the stabbing death of an Augusta man early Tuesday, Richmond County sheriff's deputies said.
Leonard Anthony Jr., 30, died at 3:10 a.m. at Medical College of Georgia Hospital of multiple stab wounds, said Deputy Coroner Charlena Graham.
An autopsy was performed Tuesday morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab on Phinizy Road, she said.
Sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said deputies were called at 11:08 p.m. Monday night to the Adams Super Inn on Gordon Highway.
Investigators found that Mr. Anthony and Johnny Lewis Dunn had argued over who had urinated on the door of Mr. Dunn's motel room during the weekend, Lt. Peebles said.
The lieutenant said Mr. Anthony hit Mr. Dunn twice in the face.
During the fight, the two men struggled and Mr. Anthony was stabbed multiple times in the back, and died later during surgery for his wounds.
Mr. Dunn also was treated for superficial wounds, Lt. Peebles said.
The sheriff's office did not file charges Tuesday. They questioned and released Mr. Dunn, Lt. Peebles said.
"It airs of self-defense," said Maj. Ken Autry.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be sent to District Attorney Danny Craig for review, Lt. Peebles said.
The district attorney will decide whether to present the case to a grand jury for an indictment.
