Two men die in head-on crash

Two Waynesboro men were killed in a collision Sunday that left a pickup in flames.

According to Burke County officials, the wreck happened at about 7:40 p.m. on Georgia Highway 80, about seven miles northeast of Waynesboro.

According to the Burke County Sheriff's Office, a 1997 Chevy Suburban carrying three cousins collided with a 1997 GMC Sierra driven by John Owen Lavender, 27.

A witness tried to pull Mr. Lavender from the truck, but it caught fire, Maj. Nikki Bailey said.

Mr. Lavender, who got married six months ago, was pronounced dead at the scene, Coroner Betty White said.

A passenger in the Suburban, David Anderson Parris, 21, was pronounced dead at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Maj. Bailey said. Marcus Rogers, another passenger in the Suburban, was in good condition Monday at MCG.

The driver of the Suburban - believed to be Elliot John Williams, 29 - fled the scene and has since been questioned by police, Maj. Bailey said. Any charges would be filed by Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the crash, she said.
