Roses have sweet prices in fundraiser to benefit Golden Harvest Food Bank

It's not every day that $10 and a couple of cans of beans will get you a dozen roses.

This week, it will.

The annual Caring Rose Week, a fundraiser for Golden Harvest Food Bank, will be held Monday through Saturday. During the week, a dozen roses can be purchased from participating area florists for $10 and two canned goods.

Len Collins, the president of the Georgia State Floral Distributors, said the event started about seven years ago as a way of "showing our community-mindedness" during the holidays.

"At Thanksgiving, we give thanks for all we have, the country we live in. What better way to show thanks than to help the hungry at a critical time of the year," he said. "The beauty of this is it's a way to reward someone who's giving something. To get roses at that price is unbelievable."

People without canned goods still can get the $10 roses by donating at least $2 with their purchase, Mr. Collins said. For more information, call 706) (736-1199, ext. 208, or visit www.goldenharvest.org.
