Franklin Rachels   (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

A native of South Georgia, he had been a lifelong resident of the Augusta area. Mr. Rachels had retired as Plant Superintendent, at the age of 60, from King Mill, after working at several local mills since high school. He had served on the Board for the Boys Club of Augusta. An avid gardener, he had won several local tomato growing competitions and in the late 1980's was recognized for growing the largest tomato in the state of Georgia. Warren (Ray) Raymond   (AUGUSTA, Ga.)
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Warren "Ray" Raymond, died October 23, 2006. Born March 31, 1925 in Queens, NY. Ray moved to Augusta in the early 1950s where he subsequently established two apparel stores in the downtown area: The Oxford Shop, a men's clothier, and Frank Goldberg's, a specialty store for women. In later years, he was President of Electra Start, Inc. Active in several civic organizations throughout his life; he served on the city's original Downtown Revitalization Project Steering Committee in the early 1970s. An avid golfer, he was also an Augusta Golf Association Member Emeritus and Member of the Augusta Country Club. Lovingly known by his golf friends as "Coach". He was a founding member of the "Wal-mart" group, a wonderful artist, and devoted father and friend. He was a life long member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Ray is survived by his wife of 60 years, Penelope "Penny" Longley Raymond; daughters, Deborah Raymond Greaves and husband, Creig, of San Diego, CA; Victoria Raymond Dale, and husband, Jim; and Robin Ashley Raymond, both of Augusta. Warren (Ray) Raymond (AUGUSTA, Ga.)
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Warren "Ray" Raymond, died October 23, 2006. Born March 31, 1925 in Queens, NY, Ray moved to Augusta in the early 1950s where he subsequently established two apparel stores in the downtown area: The Oxford Shop, a men's clothier, and Frank Goldberg's, a specialty store for women. In later years, he was President of Electra Start, Inc. Active in several civic organizations throughout his life; he served on the city's original Downtown Revitalization Project Steering Committee in the early 1970s. An avid golfer, he was also an Augusta Golf Association Member Emeritus and Member of the Augusta Country Club. Lovingly known by his golf friends as "Coach". He was a founding member of the "Wal-mart" group, a wonderful artist, and devoted father and friend. He was a life long member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Ray is survived by his wife of 60 years, Penelope "Penny" Longley Raymond; daughters, Deborah Raymond Greaves and husband, Creig, of San Diego, CA; Victoria Raymond Dale, and husband, Jim; and Robin Ashley Raymond, both of Augusta. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Sunday, October 22, 2006 at her residence, Mrs. Laurene Barnes "Geechee" Hummel, wife of the late Dr. John Emile Hummel. She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn L. Hummel of Augusta, Mary Lynn H. Satterwhite of Bristol, TN., Mela H. Evans of Augusta, Margaret E. Hummel of Augusta; her sons, John Emile Hummel Jr., of Augusta and Christopher Lawton Hummel of Hilton Head, SC.; six grandchildren. Geechee was a native of Estill, SC., but grew up in Savannah. In 1938 she moved to Augusta to attend and graduate from the Barrett School of Nursing in 1942. She retired from the V.A. Hospital after 18 1/2 years as a registered nurse. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She loved all of her grandchildren. The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 12:15 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. Timothy Donahue celebrant. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the University Hospital Nurses Alumni Assoc. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park. The Vigil and Rosary will be Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends until 8:00 at Thomas Poteet and Son.
