He graduated from Wofford College in 1941 and served in the United States Navy during WWII as a lieutenant. After WWII, he spent most of his career (31 years) as a claims adjuster for MIC a branch of General Motors. He was a resident of Augusta since 1964. After retirement Mr. Hollowell volunteered for Meals On Wheels, was a member of The United Methodist Men's Club and the Interfaith Hospitality Network. He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where he held a number of various offices across the years and the Jane Wells Sunday School Class. Mr. Hollowell enjoyed gardening, the cardio rehab gym and he was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Al J. Ballard (IRMO, S.C.)
IRMO, S.C. - Al J. Ballard, a long time electric cooperative and community development leader, passed away Wednesday, October 18th at his home in Irmo, SC. He was 76. Born in Gordon, Texas, Ballard grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was an Airborne Ranger and combat veteran and was proud of his service with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War. Ballard spent nearly 30 years as an executive with Electric Cooperative organizations in South Carolina, Nebraska, and Washington, DC. Beginning with Aiken Electric Cooperative, Aiken, SC. At the SC Electric Cooperative Association in Columbia he won national acclaim for his creation of the South Carolina Stand Tall Commission, a community development program which brought water systems and fire protection to rural areas across the state. As Executive Vice President of the SC association, Ballard provided leadership in legislation creating the Palmetto Economic Development Corporation, a partnership of the state's 20 electric cooperatives and their chief power supplier, Santee Cooper, the state-owned electric utility. In the aftermath of hurricane Hugo Ballard directed the Association in its coordination of additional crews and equipment to aid the state's electric cooperatives in restoring power to the affected areas. He also organized relief efforts for SC families affected by the storm through the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. He and his wife Jenny were instrumental in the formation of Women In Rural Electrification (WIRE) a group of SC cooperative consumers and employees which raises funds and provides support to meet community and individual family needs. The WIRE program has been adopted by several electric cooperative organizations across the country. Following his Electric Cooperative retirement, Ballard served as President of the Palmetto Project and the SC Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Over his lifetime he received numerous regional and national awards forhis humanitarian and community development efforts. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jenny Ballard of the home; a son, Al Ballard, Jr. (Sally) of Cypress, Texas; a daughter, Alyce Edwards (Brad); five grandchildren; and sisters, Marie McNitt (Jim), Grass Valley, California and Donna Bonenfant (Daniel) of Columbia. TENNILLE, Ga. - George Hardy Rowley of 217 West Adams Street, Tennille, Georgia, formerly of 157 Plum Street, Greenville, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, October 19, 2006. Born May 30, 1923 he was the elder son of Judge Geo. H. Rowley and Susan Templeton Rowley. On September 23, 1950 he married Rosamond Kahle who died July 13, 1997. On January 24, 2004 he married Mary Eva Smith of Tennille, Georgia, a long-time friend of his family. Funeral services for Mr. Rowley will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the Tennille United Methodist Church. Rev. Peter Barlow and Rev. Don Youmans will officiate. Burial will take place in the Shenango Valley Cemetery in Greenville, Pennsylvania at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 24, 2006. Rev. Harry Wood will officiate. Mr. Rowley attended the Greenville Public schools and graduated from Penn High School where he was a champion debater. He then attended Thiel College, in Greenville, Pennsylvania for one year before beginning his studies at Yale University. His college education was interrupted by his service in World War II as a deck officer in the U.S. Navy. Following the war, he resumed his studies at Yale, graduating in 1947. Mr. Rowley then entered Harvard Law School from which he graduated in 1949 with a juris doctorate degree. After serving the required six-month clerkship, he was admitted to the Bar in 1950 and was employed by the law firm of Whiteman, Voorhies, Dilley & Keck. From 1950 to 1952 he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Following his service as a federal prosecutor, Mr. Rowley was made a partner in the law firm that had been his employer. He was primarily a trial lawyer. While in active practice, Mr. Rowley was a member of many professional organizations including the American, Pennsylvania and Mercer County Bar Associations, American Judicature Society, Defense Research Institute, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. In 1975 he was elected a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. For many years he served the Mercer County Courts as Chairman of their Civil Rules Committee. For fifty years Mr. Rowley was a member of the Greenville Country Club and the Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club of Conneaut Lake. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. He was a dedicated environmentalist and was a member of the Leadership Circle of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. His real love was travel, especially his many trips to Europe and to Africa. Mr. Rowley retired from the active practice of law in 1995 because of failing eyesight. He moved to Georgia in 2004 following his marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nephews, Derek Rowley of St. Louis, Missouri and Jason Rowley of Ventura, California; a step-son William Clinton Smith and his wife, Joan Smith of Tennille and a number of cousins, including Lucille Christopher of Greenville, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Peter Templeton Rowley. The family will receive friends at the residence at 217 West Adams Street, Tennille. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Marjorie D. Thomas, age 92, of Hephzibah, Ga., entered into rest Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Doctors Hospital. Mrs. Thomas was a native of McKenzie, Alabama and had lived in Hephzibah since 1943. She was the wife of the late J.C. Thomas who died in 1980. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a nurse during WWII. Mrs. Thomas retired from Gracewood State School and Hospital where she was a registered nurse. Family members include her daughters Carolyn Peters of Gainesville, Fl., and Ruth T.
