Penalty for breaking agreement discussed

WHAT WAS DISCUSSED

Airport officials, fearing that taxi-cab companies may back out of their contracts after the lucrative Masters Week ends, discussed adding a penalty to their 2007 Ground Transportation Concession Agreement. Although no specific penalty was finalized, a "time out" period of a certain number of years was discussed. The proposal was referred to Airport Director Buster Boshears and Commissioner Lourdes Coleman.

ACTION TAKEN

Last June, airport officials voted to allow any ground transportation company the right to occupy certain airport areas for a fee. The proposal came on the heels of a lawsuit by local taxi company owners alleging that the airport had allowed Augusta Radio Cab Co. to maintain a monopoly on service at the airport. The plaintiffs dropped the case in August. Officials voted Thursday to renew the agreement until December 2007 with the contingent that a penalty may be added at a later date.

Commissioners also approved a one-year extension to Republic Parking's contract to manage, market and operate the airport's public parking areas.
