Song put Heartland on charts, hearts

The band Heartland from Huntsville, Ala., will perform its hit single, I Loved Her First, in concert tonight at Coyotes nightclub, 2512 Peach Orchard Road.

Showtime is 9:30 p.m. with tickets priced at $9.95.

This week in Billboard magazine, the single is No. 2 on the country singles chart and is expected to hit No. 1 next week.

It's rare for a country band or solo artist to achieve a Top 5 hit on an independent label, but that's what Heartland did with its touching ballad about a father's love for his daughter.

The song already has become a favorite for weddings, with typical reactions being similar to the one a female fan posted on the band's Web site, heartlandcountry.cc.

The fan wrote, "I wanted to thank you guys for the song I Loved Her First. My father passed away last year. It has been a long hard year since he has passed. I heard the song for the first time a few months ago. The instant I heard it, it was like my dad talking to me."

The song was written by songwriter/producer Walt Al-dridge and Elliott Park.

You can find the song on the band's CD I Loved Her First, which was released Oct. 10.
