Immigration fence bill is a phony
Bait and switch. That's what Congress did to pass the immigration bill calling for a 700-mile fence to be built along the U.S.-Mexican border. While Republicans brag on the measure during the campaign, they won't tell you that they way underfunded it, or that the White House doesn't even plan to spend the scanty funds that are available on the fence.
'Second' First Friday has sadly doomed the first
In a glass House - and Senate
Democrats apparently believe they've hit the mother lode of corruption scandals with the Mark Foley congressional page furor. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the U.S. House minority leader, has even rejected a bid by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., to deal with the scandal on a bipartisan basis by naming former FBI Director Louis Freeh to head up an independent investigation of the page system and recommend reforms.
A respected leader remembered
Disciplined, fair, respected, a fine leader and a Southern gentleman. These are the qualities a committed military man and educator should have - and Adna Luke Stein of Augusta, who died last week at age 78, had them in abundance.

'Second' First Friday has sadly doomed the first
Upon reflection and observation, we've come to an unfortunate conclusion.
Right message, wrong messenger
David Duke would be a bad choice to speak for a civil rights campaign to bring different races together. Similarly, John Rocker is not a good pick to take a lead role in persuading immigrants to learn English and assimilate into American culture.

Principal's departure still stings
It's always great to read success stories about the Columbia County school system. The Augusta Chronicle article "Schools honored for achievement" (Sept. 27) listed all the recent awards. Belair, North Columbia and Greenbrier elementary schools each received awards in two categories. Only through dedicated teachers, motivated leaders and committed parents is this possible.Cindy Greenspan, Evans
What about scandal-wracked Dems?
It's a mystery to me how the Democrats seem to think we are all such illiterate, ignorant sheep. They have had many, many perverts in their own party who have done far worse than former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, yet they seem to think that what Foley did should make us all run out and vote for them.Sandra Cloke, Augusta
Interconnection can bridge digital divide
The Augusta Chronicle's story "Comcastic calls ringing in area" (Aug. 29), about developments in the telecommunications market, missed a critical piece of the digital puzzle.
