AUGUSTA, Ga. - Everett Clark Kuglar, MD, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2006 at Doctors Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons: Everett C., Jr., George E. "Eddie", William D. "Chip" Patterson; daughter: Alane Patterson Bowles; daughters-in-law: Lisa Kuglar, Cathy Kuglar, Karin Patterson; son-in-law: Ralph Bowles; grandsons: Conner West, Clint Kuglar, Jacob Kuglar, Michael Bowles; granddaughters: Brannon Patterson, Courtney Patterson, Emily Bowles, Annamarie Bowles; brother: Brantley Kuglar; sister-in-law: Shirley Kuglar and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Kuglar was born November 8, 1933 in Augusta, Georgia, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Edward Kuglar. He graduated from Richmond Academy and the University of Georgia where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and numerous academic honor societies. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia, interned at University Hospital and completed his psychiatric residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He was also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Kuglar was the first Administrator of Georgia Regional Hospital at Augusta and was Superintendent there until his retirement in 1990. He served as Medical Director of Binion Forensic Center at Center State Hospital in Milledgeville, Interim Superintendent, Georgia Mental Health Institute, and was Statewide Forensic Psychiatric Consultant; Army Surgeon General's Consultant for Teaching Programs, Psychiatric Consultant to U.S. Secret Service, Board Certified Forensic Psychiatrist and had a limited part-time private practice primarily in Forensic Psychiatry. He held Board Certifications in the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Psychiatric Association as Mental Health Administrator, and the American Board of Forensic Psychiatry. He was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Kuglar was instrumental in establishing the Community Mental Health Center here in Augusta and served as acting director there in 1974 and 1975. He served as part-time staff psychiatrist with the center for five years in Washington, GA and in Augusta following his retirement and was much in demand as a speaker for mental health in the Augusta Area and over the state of Georgia. He was a Consultant to Karmia Hills School in Aiken, SC. Dr. Kuglar served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and as the Commander of the 382nd Field Hospital and went with his unit to Saudi Arabia where he was U.S. Military Commander at King Fahd National Guard Hospital during Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of the Augusta Country Club and enjoyed playing golf with his friends. Stacey Gniazdowski, with whom he celebrated their fifty-first wedding anniversary on September 24, 2006. Mrs. England was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Akron, Ohio where she served as President of the Women's Association, member of the Metanoia Guild and Wedding Director. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Katherine O. Zawacki, age 54, retired business woman, community volunteer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister succumbed to a massive heart attack on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at University Hospital. Katherine, born November 30, 1951, in Lawton, Comanche County, OK, to the late William J. and Nora O. Simpkins, was united in marriage to Thomas Allen Zawacki on December 3, 1966, in Lawton, OK. Not just a loving wife, mother, and friend, Katherine opened her heart and home to anyone in need of assistance, despite the struggles she faced herself. While operating her restaurant (1996-2001), she held Sunday dinner for all her patrons, building friendships and maintaining loving relationships with family and friends alike. Once retired from her restaurant, she continued to influence and bless the lives of children with troubled pasts, becoming a certified mentor and foster parent (2001-2005). Katherine encouraged all of her many children to improve, guiding them through difficult times, showing concern, love and wisdom. Her strength, courage, determination, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Katherine will be greatly missed. Clark Kuglar, MD   (AUGUSTA, Ga.)
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Everett Clark Kuglar, MD, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2006 at Doctors Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons: Everett C., Jr., George E. "Eddie", William D. "Chip" Patterson; daughter: Alane Patterson Bowles; daughters-in-law: Lisa Kuglar, Cathy Kuglar, Karin Patterson; son-in-law: Ralph Bowles; grandsons: Conner West, Clint Kuglar, Jacob Kuglar, Michael Bowles; granddaughters: Brannon Patterson, Courtney Patterson, Emily Bowles, Annamarie Bowles; brother: Brantley Kuglar; sister-in-law: Shirley Kuglar and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Kuglar was born November 8, 1933 in Augusta, Georgia, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Edward Kuglar. He graduated from Richmond Academy and the University of Georgia where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and numerous academic honor societies. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia, interned at University Hospital and completed his psychiatric residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He was also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Kuglar was the first Administrator of Georgia Regional Hospital at Augusta and was Superintendent there until his retirement in 1990. He served as Medical Director of Binion Forensic Center at Center State Hospital in Milledgeville, Interim Superintendent, Georgia Mental Health Institute, and was Statewide Forensic Psychiatric Consultant; Army Surgeon General's Consultant for Teaching Programs, Psychiatric Consultant to U.S. Secret Service, Board Certified Forensic Psychiatrist and had a limited part-time private practice primarily in Forensic Psychiatry. He held Board Certifications in the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Psychiatric Association as Mental Health Administrator, and the American Board of Forensic Psychiatry. He was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Kuglar was instrumental in establishing the Community Mental Health Center here in Augusta and served as acting director there in 1974 and 1975. He served as part-time staff psychiatrist with the center for five years in Washington, GA and in Augusta following his retirement and was much in demand as a speaker for mental health in the Augusta Area and over the state of Georgia. He was a Consultant to Karmia Hills School in Aiken, SC. Dr. Kuglar served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and as the Commander of the 382nd Field Hospital and went with his unit to Saudi Arabia where he was U.S. Military Commander at King Fahd National Guard Hospital during Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of the Augusta Country Club and enjoyed playing golf with his friends. Funeral services for Dr. Kuglar will be held Monday, October 2, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Augusta with Rev. Chappell Wilson officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert Moody, Carl Lennox, Fred Sims, Jr., James Whittle, William Burch and William Weeks. Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Moody, Henderson Johnson, Lee Gilstrap, Douglas Poston, Dr. Arlie Mansberg, Dr. Albert Carr, Lawrence Lamb, Judge Edward Slaton, Dr. Mickey Crouch and Sam Goolsby. WARRENTON, Ga. - Mrs. Mildred Vickery Newsome, age 84, beloved wife of the late Mr. Hugh Newsome of Gibson Highway died Thursday, September 28, 2006 at the Doctors Hospital. She was the daughter of the late John Williams Vickery and Ruby Essie Cail Vickery. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Warrenton and a homemaker. SALUDA, S.C. - Betty Pow Schumpert, 78, of 1073 Barr Woods Rd., died Friday, September 29, 2006, at her residence. Born in Edgefield County and a daughter of the late Budge Garvin and Auzelle Adams Pow, she was the wife of George William Schumpert, Jr. Mrs. Schumpert retired after 30 years as a Quality Control Inspector with Williamson - Dickie Manufacturing. She was a member of Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She was active with the Senior Citizens group and was a member of the Women's Home and Foreign Missions Society. Mrs. Schumpert was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker. Surviving are her husband of 50 1/2 years, George William Schumpert, Jr.; one son and daughter-in-law, George William III and Linda Schumpert of Saluda; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruth Crawford of Saluda and Peggy and Paul Brown of Hodges; one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jerrie Pow of Ninety Six and two grandchildren, George William "Will" Schumpert IV and Brooke Nicole Schumpert. A brother, Willie Pow and two sisters, Enoree Allen and Ebbie McCarthy preceded Mrs. Schumpert in death.
