Collision kills 29-year-old

A Mitchell, Ga., man died Friday in Warren County after his pickup hit a tractor-trailer head-on and caught fire, according to Warren County Coroner Paul Lowe.

Brian A. West, 29, was found badly burned and apparently thrown from his Ford Ranger, Mr. Lowe said.

He was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma at 9:23 p.m., the coroner said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Gus Tziavelis, 31, was not injured. The accident occurred on Georgia Highway 16 south of Warrenton near Ansley Road.

Accidental hanging kills 17-year-old

A 17-year-old high school student accidentally hanged himself at home Thursday afternoon, according to Columbia County Deputy Coroner Vernon Collins.

Nick Van Duyn of Martinez was found in the shower at home in the 300 block of Saddletree Lane, according to Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.

Nick attended Lakeside High School and was a member of Troop 182 of the Georgia-Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America and a cadet at Lakeside's Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

Burglar with sweet tooth hits storage unit

More than $1,300 in cookies and snacks were stolen Thursday from three storage spaces at a business on Stevens Creek Road in Augusta, according to Richmond County sheriff's reports.

Someone broke the locks to three separate storage units at Riverwatch Self Storage at 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., according to each police report.

The burglar took about 25 cases of cookies worth $527 from the first unit, 24 cases of snacks worth $734 from the second unit and seven cases of cookies valued at $125 from the third unit, the reports said.

Police, EMS revive woman with no pulse

Two officers helped revive a 61-year-old woman Friday afternoon who was found slumped over in her automobile at a fast food restaurant on Martintown Road, according to a North Augusta Department of Public Safety police report.

After a concerned person notified police about Frances C. Fouts at 3:55 p.m. the officers arrived at the Krystal in the 600 block of East Martintown Road, where the North Augusta woman was unconscious and without a pulse, the report said.

The officers gave the woman cardiopulmonary resuscitation and, after emergency medical personnel arrived, used a defibrillator to revive her, the police report said.

One officer rode in the ambulance that took the woman to University Hospital as she continued to receive CPR, the report said.

Ms. Fouts was eventually revived and left the hospital after her recovery, according to hospital officials.
