Carjacker crashes car into utility pole, dies

SAVANNAH, GA. - A Garden City man died after the car police say he hijacked at gunpoint early Saturday crashed into a utility pole.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police said the incident that claimed the life of Fledell Edwards, 23, occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

According to police reports, Mr. Edwards stole a Ford Crown Victoria from a man at gunpoint outside a nightclub and sped away. Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson said officers saw the speeding car and an alert went out.

Within two minutes of the call, the Ford had struck four other cars, then slammed into the utility pole, which snapped.

The transformer on the pole and live electrical wires landed on the car, preventing police and paramedics from freeing Mr. Edwards from the wreckage.

ADEL, GA. - Two teenagers were killed and two more were critically injured after their car crashed into a tree early Saturday in Cook County.

Buses in Barnwell to run again after dark

BARNWELL, S.C. - Barnwell County buses will soon be back on the streets after dark.

Local Motion, the county's only form of mass transit, will extend its service hours, which were curbed this summer because of a money shortage.

On June 7, the agency cut its evening hours back from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for its last routes and suspended all its weekend routes.

But an infusion of $25,000 from the Barnwell County Council will restore these routes - for three months.

'Cops overreacted,' Tucker says of stop

ATLANTA - Atlanta native and movie star-comedian Chris Tucker told a sellout crowd at the Fox Theatre this weekend that "the cops overreacted" during his arrest a year ago by the Georgia Highway Patrol.

Mr. Tucker described how troopers pulled him over and arrested him at gunpoint in April 2005, on Interstate 20 in Warren County.

They charged the actor with reckless driving and fleeing to elude, after he failed to stop immediately and was clocked at 109 mph in a 70 mph zone.
