Although it was a little belated, one Augusta infant received a welcomed birthday present Saturday.
Janie Brown celebrated her first birthday Sept. 6, and on Saturday, she won the $10,000 savings bond in the final round of the newborn to 3-year-old age category in the Make Kids Count scholarship contest in a drawing at Ashley Furniture Home Store.
"This is truly a blessing," said her mother, Joy Johnson.
Wishing for a little extra luck, Ms. Johnson clothed her daughter in a red and white polka-dotted dress accented with ladybugs.
"Ladybugs are supposed to be lucky. I guess she really is lucky," she said.
Cory Craft, of Evans, the other finalist, received a $5,000 scholarship bond.
The Make Kids Count scholarship giveaway is in its third year, and more than $240,000 in bonds has been distributed to nearly 200 children in that time, according to Denise Parrish, of The Augusta Chronicle's marketing department.
The Chronicle has joined with sponsors to distribute the scholarships. They include the Augusta Lynx, the Augusta Spartans, Champion Window Co., Fort Discovery, Gold Mech Services Heating and Air Conditioning, Knology, Partners in Achievement, Platt's Funeral Home and Scana Energy.
"This is a special event for our store," said Dory Gonzalez, Ashley Furniture's assistant store manager. "We're proud to be a part of Make Kids Count."
The contest involves a series of random drawings from a pool of entrants. The number of entrants is pared down until a winner is chosen.
The deadline for applications for children between 4 and 8 is Sept. 29. Applications are printed in the newspaper several times weekly.
