Five questions with Robert Perry Jr.

Robert S. "Skipper" Perry Jr. represents District 81 in the state House of Representatives and is the owner of a Segway Human Transporter, an electric scooter for use in pedestrian areas.

1. Why did you get a Segway?

"I got it to campaign on so I could go door-to-door in the heat, and it worked extremely well."

2. How fast can you go on that thing?

"It will go up to 12 miles an hour, but you have to be really careful."

3. What do you enjoy most about it?

"I just enjoy being out. You can go outdoors. You don't have to worry about finding a parking place, and it only costs you a dime a night to charge it."

4. Who else gets to ride it?

"I'm the hero. I got more old friends in my neighborhood than I thought. I'll teach anybody age 7 or older. I can make it smaller and make it slower. I've had a lot of fun teaching the kids. It's a conversation piece."

5. Are you the first person in the South Carolina Statehouse to own a Segway?

"I think I am."
