Charges against an 18-year-old Swainsboro woman are pending in the fatal stabbing of her brother Friday afternoon, according to Swainsboro Police Chief Johnny Shuman.
David M. Smith Jr., 21, was pronounced dead at the Emanuel Medical Center after a fight with his sister, Shenese Harmon, while their mother was away at the store.
"The mother has one child dead and the other one in jail," Chief Shuman said. "That's the pitiful thing about it."
He said the "tragedy" began inside their home in the 300 block of North Racetrack Street in Swainsboro, police said.
Chief Shuman said he didn't know what led to the dispute.
But at some point, he said, Ms. Harmon stabbed her brother in the chest with a knife.
Mr. Smith called authorities at about 5 p.m. When medics arrived, they found him unconscious in the street near his home, police said.
Ms. Harmon was being held in the Emanuel County Jail.
Warrants are expected to be issued this morning, Chief Shuman said.
A decision also will be made today on whether an autopsy will be performed.
