CROSS CREEK 13, AQUINAS 7
PLAY OF THE GAME: With Aquinas looking to take its first lead of the season and facing fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Cross Creek junior cornerback Floyd Ferguson broke up the potential go-ahead touchdown pass in the end zone to get the ball back and preserve the Razorbacks' lead.
WHY CROSS CREEK WON: A Razorbacks defense that bent but never broke, especially in the second half. On one Aquinas drive in the fourth quarter, blitzing Cross Creek defensive back Keenan Grissett sacked quarterback Michael Cardwell and forced a fumble at the Razorbacks' 36. Junior defensive end Jeff Howard scooped up the loose ball and returned it 33 yards to the Aquinas 33, sealing the win for Cross Creek (2-0) with 3:43 remaining.
WHY AQUINAS LOST: Turnovers and some interesting play-calling late in the game. The Irish coughed up the ball three times on fumbles, each in Cross Creek territory, each ending promising drives. And just when it appeared to have found its offensive rhythm with a nice pass-run mix late in the fourth quarter, Aquinas (0-2) went to the pass four times in a row in Cross Creek territory, resulting in two sacks and two incompletions, and turned the ball over on downs.
STAR OF THE GAME: Howard registered three sacks and had the big fumble return in the fourth quarter to spark the Razorbacks defense.
WHAT'S NEXT: Aquinas visits Harlem next week, 7:30 p.m.; Cross Creek is at home against Westside next week, 7:30 p.m.
