BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A veteran Georgia State Patrol trooper known for his compassion and professionalism has died of injuries that occurred Aug. 19 when his patrol car crashed while he was en route to assist an officer.
Cpl. Michael Young, 47, of Brunswick, died Tuesday in the intensive care unit of the Brunswick hospital of Southeast Georgia Health System, according to Glynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden.
Col. Bill Hitchens, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, described Cpl. Young as "a model Georgia State Patrol trooper who took great pride in his job."
"He always treated the public with the utmost respect and courtesy, and truly loved his job," Col. Hitchens said.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Brunswick. Col. Hitchens has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all Department of Public Safety facilities statewide.
