School scuffle lands 3 in jail

AIKEN - A scuffle at Aiken High School became a family affair Monday when a mother and her two sons were arrested after a trespassing dispute escalated.

Four people were arrested - three teens and the mother of at least two of them - when school ended Monday.

The incident began when a school resource officer spotted John F. Riley, 18, of the 800 block of Alfred Street in Aiken, in the school's back parking lot.

Having been placed on trespass notice twice, he was arrested, said Capt. Wendell Hall, a spokesman for the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

That's when the situation got out of control, he said.

A woman believed to be Mr. Riley's mother arrived and screamed at the officers, Capt. Hall said.

She refused to calm down and leave after she was told to do so at least six times, he said.

Her name was not available Monday.

Capt. Hall said that after she was placed under arrest, 17-year-old George Oakman, who has the same address as Mr. Riley, began to interfere. He also was arrested, as was a 15-year-old girl who became involved.

While that was happening, Capt. Hall said, Mr. Riley kicked out a window in the back of the patrol car and spat at officers.

Police said he was charged with trespassing after notice, malicious injury to real property and two counts of felony throwing bodily fluids.

Mr. Oakman was charged with resisting arrest, failure to comply with a public safety officer and disorderly conduct.

The teenage girl was released to her parents, but Capt. Hall said he was not sure what charges she faces.

The woman also is facing a number of charges, he said, but he was not sure what those were, either.

She was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers after the scuffle, Capt. Hall said.
