Head coach: Bruce Lane (Fifth year at Augusta Christian; 18th overall)
Classification: SCISA Region I-AAA
2005 record: 12-1
Four-year record (since 2002): 35-12
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Returning starters: 6 offense, 6 defense
Key Lions: Senior RB/DE Kyle Meeks (6-2, 195); Junior QB/DB Tyler Bourdo (5-9, 150); Senior OL/DL Bo Phillips (6-3, 220); Senior DB/WR Will Wright (5-10, 150); Senior DL/OL Clay Adams (6-1, 225)
Offensive attack: The Multiple-I formation will have a new leader after the graduation of All-Area Private School Player of the Year Lee Banks. Bourdo and Evans transfer Josh McDaniel (5-9, 170) are the top candidates. Junior FB Jay Harmon (6-0, 205) ran for 1,124 yards and 15 TDs last season. Meeks added 747 yards and 10 scores. Senior PK Alden Fisher (5-10, 165) is another weapon.
Defensive keys: Several schemes will be used, but the base set will be the 50. Wright's coverage skills are top-notch; his eight interceptions last year led the area. Junior DE Travis Cerasuolo (6-2, 195) has the quickness necessary to make things happen.
Thin at: Offensive and defensive lines
Big game: Vs. Heathwood Hall, Oct. 20
Different this year: No Banks and new opponents. Charlotte Latin School won the North Carolina championship last year. The Lions have never faced Hilton Head Prep or Pinewood Prep. Fox Creek will be the program's first game against a public school.
Could go bad if: Complacency sets in after winning a championship. An injury or two on the offensive or defensive lines would be costly.
Great year if: This year's quarterback mirrors 85 percent of what Banks did last year on the field and in the locker room. Another state championship appearance would show that this program has indeed arrived.
