Season Preview: Barnwell

Head coach: Joey Still (Second year)

Classification: SCHSL Region 5-AA

2005 record: 10-3

Four-year record (since 2002): 20-25

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Returning starters: 4 offense, 7 defense

Key War Horses: Senior RB Marcus Jacobs (5-11, 195); Senior FB/LB Andre Little (6-0, 220); Senior DE/TE Johnny Hardy (6-3, 210); Senior LB/FB Tyrone Bradley (6-0, 205); Senior QB/FS Xavier Harley (5-10, 170)

Offensive attack: Barnwell will again feature Jacobs in the I-formation after he ran for 1,380 yards last season. Still thinks Jacobs is the best runner at the school since Shelley Hammonds, who went on to play defensive back at Penn State. Senior OG Tommie Owens (6-0, 235) is the top returning blocker. Harley is a great athlete who will also see time at receiver. Junior John McKay (6-0, 180) will also see time at quarterback.

Defensive keys: Improving the run defense of the 50-front was a camp concern - stopping the run is important in this region. Little will lead a linebacker corps that is in better shape than the line and secondary. Junior DT Carlos Godina (6-1, 240) is a new face who will see time.

Thin at: Punter and kicker

Big game: Vs. Blackville-Hilda, Sept. 1

Different this year: Still said the attitudes and character of the team are better this fall.

Could go bad if: The defensive line falters. Injuries across the board are a worry, but that group needs to play well.

Great year if: Jacobs cracks the 1,600-yard mark and the team develops an alternate threat for teams to worry about. Harley could be that guy. If he rushes for 600 yards or develops at receiver, this team would be tough to stop and could win 11 or 12 games.
