Season Preview: Evans

Head coach: Marty Jackson (fourth year at Evans; 19th overall)

Classification: GHSA Region 3B-AAAA

2005 record: 1-9

Four-year record (since 2002): 12-29

Last playoff appearance: 2004

Returning starters: 6 offense, 7 defense

Key Knights: Junior QB/P Kevin Millward (6-0, 205); Senior FB/LB Jacob Gibbs (6-1, 215); Senior DE Ryan Alford (6-3, 220); Senior RB Junior Coley (6-0, 180); Junior WR Jonathon Nicely (6-4, 208)

Offensive attack: Evans will try the spread among multiple looks. Coley has blazing speed and Nicely has every tool to succeed, including some newfound confidence. Senior guard Cameron Deborde (5-8, 200) is the top lineman. The receiving corps is a team strength.

Defensive keys: Gibbs doesn't shy away from contact. If he's not near the ball, this unit will lag. Alford's versatility is his strength. He can play on the line or drop into coverage with a tight end. Millward's punting helps in the field position game. He might be the best in the state at eliminating the return game.

Thin at: Offensive and defensive lines

Big game: At Greenbrier, Sept. 22

Different this year: Schedule looks easier. Baldwin, Jefferson County and Laney have left the slate. Brunswick, Richmond Academy and Glynn Academy are the replacements.

Could go bad if: Secondary and both lines of scrimmage look shaky. If no depth emerges beyond the starting groups, the Knights' record will suffer later in the year.

Great year if: The Knights improve on their turnover ratio of last year and their experienced returnees turn their potential into productivity. If they get that and play decent on the lines, they could start 5-0 and contend for a playoff spot.
