Season Preview: Greenbrier

Head coach: Scott Chadwick (First year at Greenbrier; ninth overall)

Classification: GHSA Region 3B-AAAA

2005 record: 4-6

Four-year record (since 2002): 18-23

Last playoff appearance: 2003

Returning starters: 4 offense, 3 defense

Key Wolfpack: Junior QB Nick Richards (6-4, 205); Senior RB/DB Freddie Jones (5-9, 165); Sophomore TE/FB/DT Dylan Turner (6-1, 245); Senior WR Tyrone Bonds (5-9, 175); Senior G/ILB Rick Stahman (6-1, 235)

Offensive attack: Richards is the key to the Spread-I attack. He stood tall in the pocket and fired accurate strikes in summer passing league work. Jones might be as fast as any area player. He's the main man at tailback and played superbly in limited work last season. Stahman is the best blocking option, and the line returns four starters.

Defensive keys: Senior DT Andrew Barton (5-9, 250) will anchor the middle of the 5-3 front. Former Cross Creek coach Kevin Hunt is the new coordinator. Jones is the top cover man. The safety group appears solid, and it looks like it can support the run, but this group must stay healthy. The reserves are greener than their jerseys.

Thin at: Linebacker, defensive back

Big game: Vs. Evans, Sept. 22

Different this year: New coaching staff and leadership. The team sees a host of new teams and a new region rival in Richmond Academy.

Could go bad if: Two of the three defensive returnees go down. The shuffling to fill those starting jobs would create chaos on a unit of new faces already.

Great year if: Richards makes the Spread-I hum along like a Greenbrier fastball on the baseball diamond. If the Wolfpack sweep their local rivals and steal a couple of other games, this could be a playoff team.
