Head coach: Beau Johnson (Second year)
Classification: GISA Region 2-AA
2005 record: 5-9
Four-year record (since 2002): 28-23
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Returning starters: 8 offense, 7 defense
Key Spartans: Senior FB/LB Chad Smith (6-1,232); Senior NG/OG Matt McDaniel (6-3, 270); Sophomore QB/CB Jeremy Hayes (5-8, 165); Senior HB/SS Rett Daniel (5-10, 175); Sophomore HB/FS Hamp Wade (5-10,160)
Offensive attack: They'll line up primarily in the wishbone. Smith ran for 1,200 yards last year and is a three-time All-Area choice. Senior OT Jayme Elliot (6-0, 185) is a three-year starter on the line.
Defensive keys: The team's 5-2 revolves around Smith. He's a monster for opposing teams (more than 300 career tackles). There aren't many GISA lineman better than McDaniel, who transferred from Burke County.
Thin at: Quarterback
Big game: vs. Trinity Christian, Nov. 10
Different this year: The team has moved to a new region with Bulloch, Memorial Day and Trinity Christian.
Could go bad if: A brutal early schedule leads to an injury or two that depletes any depth. There were only 26 varsity players entering camp.
Great year if: The 15-16 kids in the playing rotation stay healthy. A winning record into October could boost this team to its best record in five years.
