Season Preview: Brentwood

Head coach: Bert Brown (Seventh year)

Classification: GISA Region 1-AA

2005 record: 6-7

Four-year record (since 2002): 37-19

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Returning starters: 5 offense, 8 defense

Key War Eagles: Senior LB/TE Jacob Lord (6-1,215); Junior HB/LB Dalton Harris (5-11,175); Senior QB/FS/K Brent Turner (6-1,150); Junior LB/LB Carl Chapman (5-11,190); Junior HB/SE/DB/P Cory McNeely (5-11,145)

Offensive attack: Brentwood will again run the Wing-T with a Harris in the backfield. This one, Dalton, led the team in rushing last year with 775 yards and 14 TDs. Lord has great hands at TE, and Turner has made strides as a passer. Chapman is the top returning blocker.

Defensive keys: The Eagles will again employ a 50 look, but this unit must fill its holes from graduation. Lord led the team in tackles with 128 stops along an all-state campaign. Junior Kevin Kicklighter (5-10, 195) is strong at defensive end. Sophomore LB Ches Cullens (5-10,165) appears ready to contribute.

Big game: vs. Briarwood, Nov. 10

Different this year: Pinecrest Academy and Westminster Christian are new to the region. Sophomores like OL/DL Wesley Logue and DB/HB Robert Walls will join Cullens in the playing mix.

Could go bad if: An inexperienced backfield buckles under adversity. The group is talented but there aren't many capable options down the depth chart.

Great year if: The backs show up as a team strength and the War Eagles find capable replacements on defense.
