Season Preview: Blackville-Hilda

Head coach: David Berry (20th year)

Classification: SCHSL Region 5-A

2005 record: 15-0

Four-year record (since 2002): 53-4

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Returning starters: 4 offense, 4 defense

Key Hawks: Senior LB/RB Taylor Hampton (5-8, 175); Senior DB/RB Broderick Raysor (5-10, 165); Senior PK/P Brandon Berry (5-8, 145); Senior DB/SE Andre Simmons (6-3, 180); Senior QB Brandon Pressley (6-0, 180)

Offensive attack: The most successful area program of late will again run the wishbone. Running back is the deepest spot on the team. Simmons averaged 23.6 yards per catch last year and scored six times. He also averaged 20 yards per punt return and carried two all the way back for scores. Senior OG Thomas Thigpen (5-10, 240) is the top returning blocker.

Defensive keys: Blackville will run a Split-6 front this year. Hampton is a hard-nosed talent at LB who's been a starter for three years on defense. Junior OLB Desmond Brown (5-9, 165) has made strides since working as a reserve last season. He'll be a vital newcomer to the starting group. Senior NG Ben Foskey (6-0, 280) brings good size to the line.

Thin at: Offensive line

Big game: vs. Barnwell, Sept. 1

Different this year: An inexperienced offensive line must weather the loss of four starters.

Could go bad if: No playmaker behind a spotty line emerges to replace the production of graduated RB Marcus Allen.

Great year if: A great year at Blackville-Hilda can mean only one thing: A repeat state championship.
