Season Preview: Briarwood Academy

Head coach: Jimmy Barnett (Fourth year)

Classification: GISA Region 1-AA

2005 record: 7-5

Four-year record (since 2002): 28-20

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Returning starters: 8 offense, 7 defense

Key Buccaneers: Senior QB David Russell (6-0, 190); Senior NG Chase Wilson (6-0, 215); Senior HB Joseph Batrous (6-0, 180); Senior TE Kyle Ewest (6-0, 195); Senior DE Jacob Gay (6-1, 190).

Offensive attack: There's a lot of pieces back for a team expected to hit the ground running. Russell is the general after throwing for 1,365 yards last year. Batrous is the playmaker. Junior SE David Joesbury (6-5, 170) has the hands to go into traffic and come out with the big play. Sophomore C Mathew Graziano and junior OT Andrew Johnson (5-11, 220) are already fine trench players.

Defensive keys: Opponents should expect to see the 5-2. Wilson is smart and tough in the middle. Junior LB John Spivey (5-10, 210) has already formed a reputation as a hitter.

Thin at: Offensive and defensive tackle

Big game: at Brentwood, Nov. 10

Different this year: This is a much tougher schedule.

Could go bad if: If either of the starting offensive tackles go down, there isn't a capable backup waiting in reserve.

Great year if: The team can stop the run on defense and develop a habit of throwing on first down while on offense. That would keep defenses on their heels. This is a difficult schedule. A 9-win season would be a fine year.
