Season Preview: Butler

Head coach: Galen Phillips (Fourth year)

Classification: GHSA Region 3B-AAA

2005 record: 2-8

Four-year record (since 2002): 15-15

Last playoff appearance: 2003

Returning starters: 3 offense, 3 defense

Key Bulldogs: Senior QB/S Michael Givens (5-11, 185); Senior HB/CB Dexter Dodd (5-7, 145); Senior CB/OLB/HB Garrett Baker (5-7, 145); Senior DL Demetrius Abrams (5-10, 260)

Offensive attack: Butler will run the double wing to pound away at teams for yardage. Givens and junior QB/HB Bruce Cole (5-10, 170) are the only speed threats. The returning starter the Bulldogs lost in mid-August to grades will hurt this group.

Defensive keys: The secondary of the 4-4 is solid, but the lack of speed all over the field will hurt. The bright spot is that Abrams and junior Stetson Dumas (5-7, 250) are quality defensive tackles. Senior LB Jamond Johnson will make the big stops each game. The team lost another starter at linebacker to grades earlier this fall.

Thin at: Offensive line and linebacker

Big game: at Cross Creek, Oct. 20

Different this year: Butler lost six starters to academic concerns at the end of the spring term. Those depletions took even more speed away from a team speed that wasn't that fast to begin with.

Could go bad if: The Bulldogs develop the same lackadaisical attitude to winning that they did last year.

Great year if: The team finished 5-5. Phillips said five wins would be a miracle with what he has.
