Season Preview: Screven County

Head coach: Pat Collins (First year at Screven County; seventh overall)

Classification: GHSA Region 3-AA

2005 record: 4-6

Four-year record (since 2002): 32-15

Last playoff appearance: 2003

Returning starters: 3 offense, 5 defense

Key Gamecocks: Senior QB Chris Pye (6-0, 208); Senior RB/LB Theo Williams (5-9, 200); Senior DE Cornelius Tyler (6-0, 172); Senior OG Scott Coady (5-10, 248); Senior LB/FB Bobrica Cooper (5-8, 230)

Offensive attack: Collins will still have Screven in the Wing-T. Pye must avoid the injuries that have plagued his career. The line should be a strength with so much experience back. Coady and senior OT Brad Waters (6-1, 290) are three-year regulars. Senior OG Marcus Morris (5-8, 178) is also a two-year starter.

Defensive keys: Cooper is the team's top linebacker in the Slant-5 set. Tyler holds the school record in the 200- and 400-meter sprints and is an aggressive defender off the edge. Williams can also control a game from his linebacker spot.

Thin at: Defensive back

Big game: Vs. Westside, Sept. 22

Different this year: Numbers. The roster increased from 70 to 110 players. That includes a jump from seven to 22 seniors.

Could go bad if: Screven shows it's still a year away from contending in a tough region and Pye can't get out of the trainers room.

Great year if: Screven finds a way to win seven games and make the playoffs for the first time in three years.
