Season Preview: Thomson

Head coach: Luther Welsh (15th at Thomson; 41st year overall)

Classification: GHSA Region 3B-AAA

2005 record: 10-2

Four-year record (since 2002): 44-6

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Returning starters: Five offense, four defense

Key Bulldogs: Senior DE Deltrick Sneed (5-11, 190); Senior DB Vincent Scott (6-1, 170); Senior QB/HB Anthony Erwin (5-8, 175); Senior FB LaBrandon Hudson (5-9, 175); Senior OT Martell Winfrey (6-6, 305)

Offensive attack: Winfrey and senior C Daniel Cheely (5-8, 205) are the lone returning starters on the offensive line, where Thomson's Wing-T attack begins. Former Screven County head coach Mark Daniel, a Welsh protg who led the Gamecocks to the 2002 Class AA state title, makes his debut as the team's offensive coordinator. Daniel inherits an offense with weapons such as Erwin and Hudson, who combined to rush for more than 2,100 yards last season.

Defensive keys: The Bulldogs lack depth at linebacker but should be solid in the secondary, which has three returning starters. The line will be inexperienced, with Sneed the only returning starter up front.

Thin at: Offensive line, defensive line and linebacker

Big game: At Washington County, Nov. 10

Different this year: Addition of Daniel should help revive the Wing-T offense.

Could go bad if: Defensive front seven fails to come together or if Erwin's decision-making doesn't improve.

Great year if: Offensive line creates plenty of holes for Thomson's speedy backfield. The Bulldogs won't be happy if their three-year absence from the Georgia Dome is extended another year.
