Season Preview: North Augusta

Head coach: Dan Pippin (First year at North Augusta; 11th overall)

Classification: SCHSL Region 4-AAAA

2005 record: 5-6

Four-year record (since 2002): 23-24

Last playoff appearance: 2003

Returning starters: 3 offense, 5 defense

Key Yellow Jackets: Senior DE D.J. Anderson (6-3, 200); Senior RB Manny Riedel (5-11, 190); Senior DT Jonathan Hamrick (6-3, 245); Senior S Mike Gist (6-0, 190); Senior WR Treh Haynes (6-4, 185)

Offensive attack: The camp battle was who would run the two-back spread option. Senior incumbent Will Churm (6-0, 185) was pressed to hold off sophomore Kwame Cunningham (5-9, 150). Pippin said he'd tell the team the choice on the ride to Strom Thurmond tonight. Riedel made All-Region in 2005 after running for 1,020 yards and eight scores.

Defensive keys: Coach Jeremy West followed Pippin from South Aiken and switched the unit to the 4-4. The blueprint is the same: Find the best trench players and move them to the defensive line. That's where Hamrick landed after making all-region last year on the offensive line. Anderson started at safety last year, but he's impressed since moving to defensive end.

Thin at: Cornerback and offensive line

Big game: Vs. Strom Thurmond, Aug. 25

Different this year: New offensive and defensive schemes and a new coaching staff.

Could go bad if: The team finds itself flopping back and forth at the quarterback spot and no consistent starter emerges.

Great year if: North Augusta beats South Aiken and Strom Thurmond and makes the playoffs. Pippin will have exceeded expectations in his first year.
