Head coach: Al Lown (14th year)
Classification: SCHSL Region 5-AA
2005 record: 7-5
Four-year record (since 2002): 28-18
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Returning starters: 4 offense, 9 defense
Key Bulldogs: Senior DB/RB Lawrence Boyd (6-2, 196); Senior LB Rueben Legrand (5-9, 197); Senior LB/TE Elgin Wright (6-2, 190); Senior DL/OL Dereck Jordan (6-0, 220); Senior OL Corey Pope (6-2, 305).
Offensive attack: Boyd caught 35 balls for 514 yards and eight scores last year. He played mostly at receiver but is the top returning ground gainer with 125 yards. Quarterback looks tough. Senior Demetrius Washington will not return to the team after choosing to focus on his baseball career. Expect two sophomores to battle it out.
Defensive keys: This unit should decide games this year. Legrand had 89 tackles and three sacks last year. Wright had 81 tackles. Classmate LB Eddie Williams (6-4, 185) had 72 tackles and two sacks. Senior three-year starting DL Alex Green (6-0, 257) had 65 tackles and two sacks.
Thin at: Offensive line and quarterback
Big game: Vs. Barnwell, Oct. 27
Different this year: New faces on the offensive line and quarterback, plus little depth. There are only 26 players in the program above the freshman level.
Could go bad if: Offense gives away points and can't score on its own. This defense shouldn't allow more than 14 points per game. Can the offense score 17 every week?
Great year if: Boyd can crack the 1,000-yard mark carrying the ball and a steady youngster emerges at quarterback who can manage a game. That could ignite a proud program that hasn't had a 10-win year since going 15-0 in 2001.
