Section Preview: Washington County

Head coach: Joel Ingram (First year)

Classification: GHSA Region 3B-AAA

2005 record: 7-4

Four-year record (since 2002): 41-11

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Returning starters: 3 offense, 3 defense

Key Golden Hawks: Senior OL Shaquan Hicks (6-3, 325); Senior RB Rosco Walls (5-9, 175); Senior LB Cardenal Coleman (6-1, 219); Senior QB Vantroski Jordan (5-11, 165); Senior FB/LB William Daniel (5-8, 175)

Offensive attack: Walls will be expected to carry the load again. Last year, he cracked the 2,100-yard rushing mark. He'll have plenty of big, burly linemen to run behind, such as Hicks and senior Nick Brantley (5-9, 264).

Defensive keys: Coleman, Daniel and Junior DE Antonio Danzy (6-3, 245) are the main cogs in the 4-4 scheme. But for all of the team's speed and strength, it still gave up 21 or more points in four of its final six games last season.

Thin at: Linebacker

Big game: Vs. Thomson, Nov. 10

Different this year: Ingram has the unenviable task of replacing legendary coach Rick Tomberlin. All eyes will be on his team's performance this year.

Could go bad if: The defense fails to materialize, or Walls gets little help from his blockers.

Great year if: Ingram can get his inexperienced squad to improve as the year progresses and Washington County finds itself in the hunt for the region title.
