The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist Jenkins County in the investigation of the stabbing death of a Jenkins County man.
Leonard Rountree, 56, of the 4600 block of Regan Road, was reportedly stabbed to death by his 16-year-old niece early Friday morning, Jenkins County Sheriff Timothy Fields said.
Mr. Rountree was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m., said Jenkins County Coroner Henry Young.
Sheriff Fields said he refused to identify the girl because she is a juvenile.
"It's a very sad and tragic situation," he said.
He said he wasn't sure whether any charges will be filed because of circumstances surrounding the incident.
"It may have been in self-defense," he said.
Mr. Young said it appeared a kitchen knife was used in the assault and resulted in a fatal wound to the liver and aorta.
A fight might have preceded the attack, Sheriff Fields said.
"Mr. Rountree was her uncle and helped raise the girl," he said.
The victim's body was taken to the GBI State Crime Lab in Atlanta for autopsy Friday and toxicology tests to determine his blood alcohol content, the sheriff said.
