George Schaeffer (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. George Case Schaeffer, 90, beloved husband of Mrs. Myrtle Thompson Schaeffer, entered into rest on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at his residence. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Greg DeLoach officiating. Mr. Schaeffer was a native of Lebam, Washington, but spent his earlier years in Redondo Beach, California. He graduated from Redondo Union High School and Santa Monica Junior College, before attending the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1942. He volunteered for the United States Army during World War II, and served in the Medical Department as a Medical Administrative Officer. In 1944, he married Myrtle Thompson, and they had a daughter, Myrtle Mara Schaeffer. He was discharged from the military in 1946, but continued to work for the Army as a civilian medical photographer until the hospital closed in 1952. He went to work as a photographer for the Savannah River Plant Construction/Dupont and was appointed photographic supervisor. He was selected for Public Relations Photographer for the Savannah River Plant News. In 1956, he opened his own photographic studio, and worked for 39 years as a professional photographer. He retired in 1996. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta, and a member of the Crusader Sunday School Class, as well as a Deacon Emeritus. He was a life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, a member of the Augusta Lions Club, the Self Help for the Hard of Hearing Group (SHHH), and the Webb Masonic Lodge. In addition to his wife, Myrtle, he is survived by his daughter, Mara Myrtle Alberta Schaeffer of Altadena, CA., and two grandsons, Colyn Case Schaeffer, and Carl Casey Case Schaeffer. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.J. and Katherine Schaeffer, and by his three brothers, John Case Schaeffer, Richard Case Schaeffer, MD, and Robert Case Schaeffer, MD.
