The accolades for Fort Gordon's entertainment department continue to roll in.
"I'm very proud of having received this national award," said Steve Walpert, the Army post's entertainment director, who received the David C. Bryant Outstanding Service Award from the American Association of Community Theatre in Lago Vista, Texas, on July 12.
The award recognizes members of the association "for significant, valuable and lasting service to community theatre," according to a news release.
Mr. Walpert has been at Fort Gordon for nearly 30 years.
As the entertainment program director, he plans and directs dinner theater performances, coordinates entertainment for large festivals, such as Cinco de Mayo and Oktoberfest, and coordinates touring shows such as the Soldier Show.
He has directed more than 150 shows at Fort Gordon's dinner theater, and he oversees a staff of 10 paid employees and works with hundreds of volunteers annually.
"Any director or arts professional cannot be successful without an extensive broad base of support," he said, speaking of the volunteers who make many of the programs possible.
Other recent awards garnered by the entertainment program at Fort Gordon include the Irving Berlin Award for Programming Excellence and Best Army Entertainment Program in 2005, overall first place in the 2005 Army Festival of Performing Arts and best musical production in the 2004 Army Festival of the Performing Arts.
In 2002, Mr. Walpert received the James T. Martin Award for Individual Excellence from the Army Entertainment Division in Washington, D.C.
